Reptile Garden
Reptile Garden by Ken R. Sheide

2D ARTWORK:

On this page is a sampling of non-3D artwork I've made with a computer.

First you'll find some full size backgrounds that I've created for use as wallpaper. If you like them, feel free to grab and use them!

Next are some smaller, tileable images I made for use as either wallpaper or web page backgrounds. I took a few of these images, denoted by asterisks, from other peoples' web pages and modified them by making them tile or by fixing visual inconsistencies. I've seen a lot of terrible backgrounds out on the web, but many would be great with just a little tweaking. Click the thumbnails to see the tiles used on a test web page and FULL SIZE!

As is the case on all my pages the thumbnail images link to the full size versions so make sure you're looking at the full size images before saving. To save any of the images while browsing with a PC just right-click the image and choose save from the pop-up menu. With a MAC just click and hold the mouse button to get an option to save.

Something I do, and you might want to do as well, is reduce all wallpaper images to 256 color bitmaps. That way they don't take up a large amount of hard drive space, don't take long to load, and don't use up that much memory. As long as you decrease the color bit depth with a decent algorithm (I get excellent results with those present in Paint Shop Pro) the image will still look great.

B2Layout B2Layout.jpg 75K 800x600 image. An image I made for an Air Combat Command (ACC) contest. The original photos are from the ACC multimedia gallery.
Backgnd1 Backgnd1.jpg 95K 800x600 image. This type of image is easy to make and only takes some creativity and experimenting within Paint Shop Pro. I didn't use to save these images, but I've begun doing so to put them here for other peoples' use (they make great backgrounds).
Backgnd2 Backgnd2.jpg 87K 800x600 image. Another simple background I made after about five minutes of playing around in Paint Shop Pro. I made this one with two images of color gradients that were pasted together using layers. One image had its color depth decreased to 1-bit then again increased to create the line pattern.
Backgnd3 Backgnd3.jpg 98K 800x600 image. Yet another simple background image made with Paint Shop Pro. This one started out as a photo of a sea anemone! I cut and pasted pieces of the anemone, then selected portions and changed their hue. Finally, I gaussian blurred and hot wax coated the image to smooth out rough edges.
Backgnd4 Backgnd4.jpg 97K 800x600 image. Another simple background image made with Paint Shop Pro. I began this one with a bunch of spheres made with KPT3. Then I grabbed and smeared colorful portions of the spheres. Finally, I used hot wax coating to give the image a beveled look.
Backgnd5 Backgnd5.jpg 90K 800x600 image. This simple background, made with Paint Shop Pro, began life as a photo of a waterfall (which is still vaguely recognizable). I added noise to a layer, then mixed it with the original photo. Then I increased contrast, motion blurred, hot wax coated, and changed the hue of the image.
BusinessCard BusinessCard.jpg 86K 525x300 image. Here's a smaller version of the digital file I designed for my business cards. 08 Oct 99.
Canyonland Canyonland.jpg 82K 800x600 image. I screen captured this image (generated by Psycho Deli in After Dark) using Paint Shop Pro. Then I cropped and smoothed a portion of it, changed the hue, contrast, brightness, and warped it with some filters. Finally, I did a few Hot Wax coatings to give it texture. 14 Aug 99.
ColoredWall ColoredWall.jpg 27K 800x600 image. Just a quick creation resulting from playing around in Paint Shop Pro. Oct 05.
DyedSepia DyedSepia.jpg 43K 800x600 image. I made this from a photo I took of Glenys by making it grayscale, colorizing it, and changing its hue. Then I used a pattern layer merged with the photo via soft light, the retouch tool to smooth some areas and change the hues, and a filter to further texturize the image. Simple. 15 Sep 00.
E3Layout E3Layout.jpg 71K 800x600 image. Another image submitted to the ACC contest. I like the rotodome in the corner (I made it with Bryce 2). Original photos from the ACC image gallery.
ElkPaint ElkPaint.jpg 53K 800x600 image. A painting-like effect I made from one of my pictures of a Roosevelt Elk. 27 Mar 05.
EtherealFlowers EtherealFlowers.jpg 68K 800x600 image. I made this by applying a few filters and blurs to a blank canvas. It reminds me of a field of strange orange globe flowers with green leaves below the flowers. It also looks like a scene from the movie What Dreams May Come. 28 Jul 02.
Faces Faces.jpg 132K 800x600 image. This month I've made a few very large digital art pieces for printing and placing on my walls to fill white space. This is the first and involved creating the colored face (me) and then pasting it randomly across the canvas. 01 May 05.
FreshCatch FreshCatch.jpg 85K 800x600 image. A simple grayscale photo of mine that I selectively colored. Yet another creation made for filling my walls. 04 May 05.
Gridwork Gridwork.jpg 81K 800x600 image. I started this out as two layers of different-colored lines which I combined and made all green. Then I added a forest theme by keeping only the green component of some of my forest pictures and placing them into the rectangles created from the intersecting lines. 04 May 05.
Kanji Kanji.jpg 52K 325x560 image. I'm not sure who first made this inspirational Kanji message, but I took the black and white version and morphed it into this graphically pleasing banner. It makes a great desktop wallpaper! 16 Jan 02.
NebulaFire NebulaFire.jpg 93K 800x600 image. I started this out with two separate KPT textures and mixed them together in one image using masks and layers. Then I added some ripples, blurs, and distortion using KPT5. Finally I cropped, resized, and changed the hue to produce this. 09 Aug 99.
Plamp Plamp.jpg 127K 800x600 image. This started as a picture of a great piece of photography equipment; the Plamp (still vaguely visible). From there I really tweaked it then, to add color, laid down a random pattern of hexagons and combined them with the base image. 02 May 05.
RedSponge RedSponge.jpg 87K 800x600 image. I made this so long ago that I don't remember the steps I took to create it. Here it is, regardless. 28 Jul 02.
RGPool RGPool.jpg 91K 800x600 image. I used Pixel 3D to make the circular Reptile Garden logo on the eight ball. Everything else was done within Paint Shop Pro with help from Kai's Power Tools and Eye Candy. 14 Aug 99.
TextureVents TextureVents.jpg 118K 800x600 image. Yet another creating resulting from playing around in Paint Shop Pro until I got something I liked. Oct 05.
WarwickMoon WarwickMoon.jpg 58K 800x600 image. Moon over the Warwick River in SE Virginia at sunset. This image is here because it is a compositve of two photographs. Without the moon it would be a 100% natural photograph. Mar 07.
